HTML word count — questions

Everything about counting words and characters on a web page.

How do I count the words on a web page?

Paste the page's URL, paste its HTML source, or upload the saved .html file, then click Count it. The tool reads the visible text inside the page's <body> and reports the word count and character count instantly — no sign-up, no install.

Does it count characters as well as words?

Yes. Every count shows words, total characters, characters without spaces, and an estimated reading time. The paste box also updates the word and character counts live as you type.

Does it exclude the header, footer and navigation?

By default the tool skips the <footer>, plus scripts and styles, so you count the real content. You can also tick options to skip the <header> and <nav> and measure only the main body — ideal for SEO content audits.

Is the HTML word counter free and private?

Completely free, with no limits. It runs 100% in your browser, so nothing you paste or upload ever leaves your device — the only thing fetched is a link you explicitly ask it to count.

Can I count words for several pages at once?

Yes. In the link mode, enter one URL per line to count a batch of pages, or upload multiple .html files together. You'll get a per-page table with totals for words and characters.
